Tottenham High Cross
|
The origins of the High Cross are thought to date from Roman times. In the domesday-book it is written Toteham, said to be derived from the Saxon words Toten and Ham—and its adjunct from a high cross of wood, which formerly surmounted the church tower, visible for many miles round. The present cross, near Tottenham Green, which has superseded the one of wood, is an octangular brick column erected in 1600, and repaired and decorated with various architectural embellishments in 1809.
