It would appear from references in the 4 November 1867 edition of the London Daily Newspaper that Ansley Windus may have had to sell his collection because of financial difficulties caused by 'the pressure of two heavy law suits .and other difficulties, and through a hurt on horseback before referred to, which no physician as yet consulted has been able to cure effectually, although frequently consulted at considerable expense'.
