Still Framed?
The watercolours by JMW Turner identified in John Scarlett Davis painting of the BG Windus collection are now located in galleries around the world, as the listing below shows. When Gerry Alabone, then Head of Frames conservation at the Tate, mused about finding one of the paintings which was still in its original frame he set a challenge which has almost been completed.
That the search is almost over without locating such a frame is a disappointment (Alexis at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute is going to make one final check with the chief registrar to look at the frame in which the painting arrived at the gallery) however the kindness and encouragement given by everyone on the way has been immensely cheering.
Thank you all:
Tony Magnusson, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide (Alnwick Castle)
Kim Sloan, British Museum and to Angela, Chris and Enrico in the Print Room (Hastings: deep sea fishing, Penmaen-Mawr, Saltash)
Hettie Ward and Tim Knox, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (Richmond from the moors)
Allison Jackson, Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum (Corfe Castle)
Hannah Williamson, Manchester Art Gallery (Exeter, Malvern Abbey and Gate)
Britany Salsbury and Maureen O'Brien, Museum of Art, Rhode Island, School of Design (Osterspey and Feltzen)
John Payne, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (Okehampton)
Alex Patterson, National Museums Liverpool and Mike at Lady Lever Collection reception (Minehead)
Scott Wilcox and Martin Postle, Paul Mellon Collection (Folkestone Harbour and coast to Dover, Teignmouth)
Alexis Goodin, Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute (Fowey Harbour, Entrance to)
Amanda Draper, University of Liverpool Art Gallery & Collections (Bow and Arrow Castle)
Louise Cooling, V&A (Holy Island)
Ivan Houghton, Lynn Roberts, Selby Whittingham and of course to Gerry Alabone for the suggestion and his help along the way.
